The machine is generally in decent shape. It is old but it still works. The chassis has space for the SSD drives although it is not really meant for them--they rest on top of the HDDs and are not hot-swappable. I cleaned and reapplied thermal paste to the CPUs. I did find that I had to set the fan level to performance (but not full) to do any significant processing--otherwise the fans would continually, gradually cycle between low and high; which I found irating even in a NetShelter cabinet. All storage is wired to use the hardware RAID card, but there is no BBU; so write-through is supported but not write-back. I found that the HDD array, using RAID 5, operates at about 26-27MB/s.
This machine was used for 4-5 years as my primary workstation via Citrix XenDesktop and then placed into storage for about 4. It would probably be great as a media server, a backup server, or even as an inexpensive hardware investment for experimenting with colocation.
If you are thinking of getting it for your kid to experiment with 1) good on you and 2) it only has VGA graphics, which is limiting for that purpose I think. My recommendation is getting them an ODROID XU4/XU4Q--which is what I use for my mobile file server in my mobile workstation setup. They are very cool, cheap and faster that the RaspPi 4s. Checkout http://hardkernel.com.
If you have any problems with this machine please let me know. I installed Ubuntu 19.10 onto it and had it running for a couple days without any problems. I would not sell it if I thought it would not work. I do not know how to get the TRIM information for the drives, but they were never used in any serious production capacity, so they should have some decent life left in them.
